Saints and ‘Aints
The New Orleans Saints football team has a most interesting history. They have been recent Super Bowl champs following a number of good regular seasons and post season appearances. The turn-around has come with the acquisition of Drew Breeze as the quarterback. They are now a year-in year-out contender in the NFC.
This has not always been their fortune. They were not contenders or even very good for most of the years prior to his arrival. The most humorous years were the ones when they were known affectionately as the ‘Aints. People actually came to their games with bags on their heads symbolizing their desire to remain anonymous as Saints fans. The people of God are called saints. Paul uses the word often in the introductions to his letters. I and II Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians all open with references to the saints. The Greek word translated “saints” is pronounced “hagios”. It means simply holy. Saints, then, are “the holy ones”. They have been “sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints” (I Corinthians 1:2). One of the classic passages about this concept is I Peter 1:15-16, “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’” The expectation for the saints of God is holiness. It is their lifestyle. It is their life. It affects everything they think, do, say, and dream. However, there are times when saints feel like they should be wearing a bag. They are ashamed of their conduct. They are, at that moment, ‘aints not saints. The Bible teaches that saints are condemnation free (Romans 8:1) not sin free. The struggle with sin will be lifelong but we get to keep the name—Saints. Greeters for Feb 26 and 29: Jeff and Janie Amburgey Owen and Rhonda Barnes Melinda Dolen
